Chinese New Year<\/b><\/a><\/sup> also known as the\u00a0Spring Festival<\/b>, or simply the\u00a0Lunar New Year<\/b>, in modern China, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar\u00a0Chinese calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the\u00a0Lantern Festival\u00a0on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the Lunar New Year was on Friday, 16 February, initiating the\u00a0year of the Dog.<\/p>\n

It is one of the world’s most prominent and celebrated festivals, with the largest annual mass human migration in the world. It is a major holiday in\u00a0China\u00a0and has had strong influence on the lunar new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours, including\u00a0Taiwan,\u00a0Hong Kong,\u00a0Macau,\u00a0Singapore, Indonesia,\u00a0Malaysia,\u00a0Korea,\u00a0Thailand,\u00a0Vietnam,\u00a0Cambodia,\u00a0Mauritius,\u00a0Australia, and the\u00a0Philippines.<\/p>\n

The New Year festival is centuries old and associated with several myths and customs. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honor\u00a0deities\u00a0as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Lunar New Year vary widely. Often, the evening preceding Lunar New Year’s Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual\u00a0reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Windows and doors are decorated with red color\u00a0paper-cuts\u00a0and\u00a0couplets\u00a0with popular themes of\u00a0“good fortune” or “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in\u00a0red paper envelopes. In about one third of the Mainland population, or 500 million Northerners, dumplings (especially those of vegetarian fillings) feature prominently in the meals celebrating the festival.<\/p>\n
